Social Work
Social work is a profession rooted in a commitment to human dignity, social justice, and the right of every person to live a life that is safe and fulfilling. Social workers support individuals and families across a huge range of circumstances, from child protection and adult safeguarding to mental health, disability, homelessness, and domestic abuse. At the University of Suffolk this three-year full-time degree prepares you for registration as a qualified social worker. You will develop the core values and practical skills that make social work distinctive as a profession, studying relevant law, social policy, psychology, sociology, and the theory and practice of social work intervention. You will learn to work with people in distress, to support them in accessing resources and exercising their rights, and to carry out protection work that ensures the safety and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults.
The programme integrates academic study with substantial supervised practice placements, where you will apply your learning in real settings alongside experienced practitioners.
Graduates register with Social Work England as qualified social workers and go on to work in local authority children's services, adult social care, the NHS, the criminal justice system, voluntary organisations, and international social development contexts. Social work is a profession that offers considerable scope for development, with many practitioners going on to senior practitioner, leadership, or management roles. Many also pursue postgraduate study in specialist areas such as mental health, child and family work, or social policy.
The profession is challenging and demanding, but it offers the deep satisfaction of meaningful work at the most important moments of people's lives.
