Social Work

Social work is one of the most demanding and most meaningful professions in contemporary society. It exists at the intersection of individual need and social structure, requiring practitioners to support vulnerable people across the life course, from children and families in crisis to older adults and people with disabilities, while also understanding the systemic conditions, poverty, inequality, trauma, and institutional failure, that shape those needs. Becoming a social worker means developing professional judgement, ethical clarity, and the practical skills to intervene effectively in complex human situations.

At the University of Stirling, this four-year full-time programme leads to a qualification recognised across the UK, preparing you to practise in statutory, voluntary, and independent settings. Stirling has significant expertise in social work education, and you will learn from staff who combine research leadership with direct practice experience. A distinctive feature of this programme is the opportunity to spend a year abroad, broadening your understanding of how different societies organise welfare and social care.

Throughout the degree you will move between academic study and supervised practice placements, giving you the chance to apply theory in real professional contexts and to build the competencies required for registration as a social worker.

You will examine social policy, law, human development, and the social sciences, learning how structural factors shape people's lives and how professional intervention is governed and scrutinised. You will also develop skills in assessment, care planning, communication, and working within multi-agency teams.

Graduates are eligible to register as qualified social workers and can practise across children's services, adult social care, mental health, criminal justice, and community settings. Further study at Master's level is also possible, including specialist routes in areas such as practice education, leadership, or research, and many qualified social workers go on to take on roles as supervisors, managers, and policy advisers.
