Social Care

Social care in Scotland is the system of services and support that enables people to live as independently and with as much quality of life as possible, particularly those who need assistance due to age, disability, mental health challenges, or other circumstances. It is a sector defined by its values, including dignity, respect, inclusion, and a commitment to supporting people's rights to self-determination, as well as by a practical body of knowledge and skill that allows practitioners to assess need, plan support, coordinate services, and work in partnership with the individuals and families they serve. The Open University's programme in social care for Scotland is delivered through distance learning on a part-time basis, making it accessible to people who are already working in the sector and want to formalise and develop their knowledge, or to those who need to study flexibly around other commitments.
