Social Anthropology with Religion in Society

Social anthropology is the comparative study of human societies and cultures, exploring the extraordinary diversity of ways in which human beings have organised their social lives, made meaning and created communities across the globe. It is a discipline rooted in long-term ethnographic fieldwork and committed to understanding cultures from within, on their own terms, rather than through the lens of any single cultural perspective. The study of religion in society adds a specific focus on one of the most universal and consequential dimensions of human culture, examining how religious beliefs, practices and institutions shape social life, identity, political structures and relations between communities.

At the University of St Andrews you will pursue social anthropology within a department of considerable research strength, engaging with the huge diversity of contemporary human experience and analysing what makes human societies similar and different from one another. You will study ethnographic theory and method, the anthropology of kinship, economy, politics and religion, and you will engage with a wide range of cultural and regional traditions. The programme runs over four years full time, reflecting the Scottish honours degree structure, and includes a year abroad, which is particularly significant for a discipline that places such high value on the direct experience of other cultural settings.

You will develop skills in ethnographic research, qualitative analysis, theoretical argument, cross-cultural comparison and extended academic writing. The anthropological habit of questioning cultural assumptions and attending carefully to difference is a genuinely transferable intellectual disposition.

Graduates pursue careers in international development, NGOs, the civil service, education, journalism, social research, the cultural sector and roles requiring cross-cultural sensitivity and analytical depth. Postgraduate study in social anthropology, development studies or a related field is also a natural route.
