Social Anthropology and Theological Studies

Social anthropology and theological studies are disciplines that both take seriously the question of what it means to be human, but approach it from different directions. Social anthropology investigates the extraordinary diversity of human cultures, social arrangements, beliefs, and practices, seeking to understand why human societies differ so much from one another and what they share beneath those differences. Theological studies examines the religious traditions and theological ideas that have shaped human life across cultures and history, asking what people have believed about the nature of the divine, the meaning of existence, and the obligations of moral life.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time MA (Hons) programme brings these two disciplines into productive dialogue. Social anthropology at St Andrews explores contemporary human experience through fieldwork-based methods and rigorous comparative analysis, asking what makes people similar and what makes them different. Theological studies adds depth to that inquiry, examining how religious commitments shape social life, how communities organise around shared beliefs, and how theological traditions have evolved and contested one another across time.
