Serbian/Croatian and Spanish brings together two of Europe's major linguistic traditions and the histories and cultures that have shaped them. Serbian and Croatian are, linguistically speaking, very closely related South Slavic languages, spoken across Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, a region whose twentieth-century history, from the formation and dissolution of Yugoslavia to the wars of the 1990s and the subsequent processes of European integration, is among the most dramatic and contested in the world. Spanish, by contrast, is one of the most widely spoken languages on earth, with a presence across Europe, Latin America, and beyond, and a literary and cultural tradition of extraordinary richness.

Studying these two languages together at UCL gives you genuine fluency in both, alongside a deep understanding of the societies that speak them.

This four-year full-time programme at University College London takes you from the basics of each language through to advanced literary and cultural study conducted in both. You will read literature in the original, engage with film, journalism, and cultural texts, and develop the analytical skills to interpret them in their historical and political contexts. UCL has strong expertise in both Slavic and Hispanic studies, and the programme benefits from the university's broader commitment to area studies and its location in one of the world's most multilingual cities.
