Scots Law with Spanish

Scots law is one of the world's distinctive legal systems, combining elements of the Roman-law civil law tradition with Scottish common law and, increasingly, UK and international legal frameworks. Studying it at degree level gives you a thorough formation in legal reasoning, doctrine, and professional practice within a system that is genuinely different from English law. Adding Spanish to a law degree opens a further dimension: a language spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Europe and Latin America, and access to the legal cultures and systems of Spanish-speaking jurisdictions.

At the University of Dundee this four-year, full-time LLB provides the foundations of legal knowledge that underpin the practice of Scots law, with a wide range of specialist options that allow you to develop your particular interests. You will cover the core subjects required for professional qualification, including contract, delict, property, criminal law, and constitutional and administrative law, developing the key transferable skills of legal analysis, written argument, and professional communication alongside your doctrinal knowledge. The Spanish component develops your language ability to a high level alongside engagement with Spanish-speaking legal and cultural contexts.

A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the chance to study or spend time in a Spanish-speaking environment and to deepen both your linguistic competence and your understanding of different legal traditions.

Graduates of this programme are equipped for careers in the Scottish legal profession, with the LLB providing the academic foundation for the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice. Many go on to qualify as solicitors in Scotland or to pursue practice in jurisdictions where both their Scottish legal knowledge and their Spanish-language ability are valuable. Others enter careers in international law, business, compliance, government, and public policy, where legal training and multilingualism are equally useful.
