Romanian and Ukrainian

Romanian and Ukrainian is a combination that connects two Eastern European linguistic and cultural traditions with distinct but intertwined histories. Romanian, the only Romance language in Eastern Europe, carries the imprint of its Latin origins alongside Byzantine, Slavic, Ottoman, and modern Western influences, giving it a cultural profile that reflects centuries of contact at the crossroads of Europe. Ukrainian, a Slavic language with a rich literary heritage, is the national language of one of Europe's largest countries, and its significance in the geopolitical landscape of the twenty-first century has made it one of the most urgently relevant languages for students with an interest in European affairs.

At UCL this four-year full-time BA divides its attention equally between the two languages. You will develop proficiency across all four skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with translation practice in both directions. Cultural study runs throughout the degree, covering literature, history, film, linguistics, politics, and other fields that illuminate the societies in which Romanian and Ukrainian are spoken.

A wide range of modules allows you to tailor the degree to your interests, and a year abroad in the third year places you in environments where your languages are spoken, providing the immersive experience that is essential for genuine language competence.

Graduates move into careers in translation and interpreting, international affairs, journalism, the civil service, education, cultural institutions, and any professional context where knowledge of Eastern European languages and cultures is an asset. The combination of Romanian and Ukrainian expertise is particularly distinctive for roles connected to the European Union, European security, and the societies of South-Eastern and Eastern Europe. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in Slavonic studies, Romanian studies, area studies, or translation.
