About this course

Robotics and mechatronics engineering sits at the convergence of mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science, and control systems. It is the discipline that designs and builds the intelligent machines that are reshaping manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, agriculture, and many other sectors. Mechatronics engineers understand both the physical systems that do work in the world and the computational and electronic systems that sense, control, and direct that work.

This combination makes the discipline one of the most exciting and versatile in modern engineering.

This four-year full-time programme at the University of Brighton includes an integrated foundation year for students entering without the typical A-level requirements in mathematics and physics, as well as a sandwich year and work placement that provide substantial professional experience within the degree. The foundation year builds the mathematical and scientific foundation needed for the main engineering programme, ensuring you are fully prepared for the technical content that follows. You will then study mechanical principles, electronics, embedded systems, control theory, programming, sensors and actuators, and the design and testing of robotic systems.

The sandwich year places you in an engineering company or research environment, giving you real-world experience that contextualises and deepens everything you study in the university.

Graduates from this programme are well placed for careers in robotics and automation, manufacturing engineering, product design, aerospace, automotive engineering, medical devices, and the rapidly expanding field of autonomous systems. The combination of mechanical, electronic, and software skills is particularly valuable because it makes graduates able to work across the full system, not just one part of it. Professional recognition routes lead toward chartered engineer status.
