About this course

Robotics and embedded systems engineering is concerned with building physical computing systems that sense the world, process information, and act upon their environment in real time. Embedded systems are computing devices integrated into larger machines or products, from the microcontrollers in appliances and vehicles to the systems managing industrial processes and medical equipment. Robotics applies these principles to the design of machines that can perceive, reason, and move, operating with varying degrees of autonomy in environments ranging from factory floors and warehouses to hospitals and outer space.

The convergence of robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced sensing is one of the most rapidly evolving areas of engineering, with applications expanding across every sector of the economy.

At Aberystwyth University, this four-year full-time BEng includes an integrated industrial year, which provides valuable professional experience and considerably enhances your career prospects on graduation. The degree covers a broad range of topics including mathematics, programming, artificial intelligence, robotics, software engineering, electronics, sensors, and actuators, with a consistent focus on building and operating physical systems that involve computerised sensing and control. This hands-on, practical orientation distinguishes the programme from purely theoretical computing degrees and ensures that you graduate with the ability to design, build, and test real systems rather than just describe them.

Research-led teaching ensures that the content reflects the state of the field, and the supportive learning environment is designed to help students of different backgrounds develop confidence alongside technical skill.

Graduates are in strong demand across a wide range of industries. Roles include robotics engineer, embedded software developer, control systems engineer, automation engineer, and systems integrator. Sectors recruiting graduates include manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, defence, medical devices, agricultural technology, logistics, and consumer electronics.

The integration of software and hardware skills that the degree provides is particularly valued as the boundary between physical and digital systems continues to dissolve. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in robotics, artificial intelligence, control engineering, or related fields, deepening specialist expertise for research or advanced industrial roles.
