About this course

Robotic engineering is a discipline at the intersection of electrical engineering, computer science, and mechanical systems, concerned with the design, construction, and programming of autonomous and semi-autonomous machines that can sense their environment, make decisions, and take actions. Robotics is one of the fastest-growing fields in engineering, driven by advances in sensors, computing power, and machine learning, and its applications span manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, exploration, agriculture, and defence. The engineers who can build and programme these systems are in growing demand across many sectors.

At the University of Essex, this three-year, full-time programme gives you a strong foundation in both electrical engineering and computer science alongside the specific knowledge of robotic systems, giving you the tools to design and test robots that can operate in real environments. You will develop skills in electronic circuit design, programming, control systems, machine learning, and the integration of hardware and software that robotics requires. The programme is hands-on, with opportunities to build and test your own robotic systems as part of your learning, developing the practical competence that employers value alongside the theoretical understanding.

Graduates of robotic engineering programmes go on to careers in robotics research and development, manufacturing automation, autonomous vehicle development, aerospace and defence systems, healthcare technology, and software development for intelligent systems. The combination of hardware and software expertise the degree develops is increasingly valuable as the boundary between these domains blurs in advanced robotics. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in robotics, artificial intelligence, mechatronics, or control engineering, building on the strong technical foundation the undergraduate degree provides.
