About this course

Resource and exploration geology is the branch of geology concerned with finding, characterising, and assessing deposits of mineral and energy resources, and with understanding the geological processes that form and distribute them. It is a field of direct economic importance, as the materials on which modern industry depends, from metals and minerals to fossil fuels and the rare elements used in electronics and renewable energy technology, must first be found and understood before they can be extracted. Exploration geologists work at the boundary between scientific investigation and commercial risk, using a range of geophysical, geochemical, and mapping techniques to identify where resources may lie and to evaluate their viability.

At the University of Exeter this three-year programme is accredited by the Geological Society, which is the recognised professional body for geologists in the UK, and the qualification provides the first step on the pathway to Chartered Geologist status after graduation. You will develop a thorough grounding in the geological sciences, including mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, and sedimentary environments, alongside specialist knowledge of ore deposit formation, exploration methods, and the environmental and regulatory context within which resource extraction takes place. Fieldwork is an important component of geological study, and you will develop practical skills in mapping, sample collection, and data interpretation in the field.

Graduates in resource and exploration geology work for mining and minerals companies, oil and gas companies, environmental consultancies, regulatory bodies, and geotechnical organisations.
