Religion, theology and society is a discipline that takes seriously one of the most persistent and consequential dimensions of human life. Religious belief and practice have shaped cultures, political orders, artistic traditions and ethical frameworks across the whole of human history, and they continue to do so in ways that make understanding religion vital for making sense of the contemporary world. The discipline approaches religious traditions with both sympathetic scholarly attention and critical analytical rigour, examining what people believe, how they practise their beliefs, and what effects those beliefs and practices have on individuals and societies.

At the University of Leeds you will explore a wide variety of religious traditions across time and cultures, considering their effects on public life, politics, ethics, art and social organisation. The programme runs full time over three years and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic studies. These opportunities to engage with religion in practical and cross-cultural contexts deepen your understanding in ways that purely classroom-based study cannot replicate.

You will develop skills in textual and source analysis, religious history and theory, ethical reasoning, comparative religious studies, research methods and extended academic writing.
