Religion, Philosophy and Ethics

Religion, philosophy and ethics together form one of the most searching areas of intellectual inquiry available to undergraduates. Religion examines the beliefs, practices, texts and institutions that have shaped human societies across the world, from ancient traditions to living faiths. Philosophy trains you in rigorous argument and the analysis of fundamental questions about knowledge, reality, mind and morality.

Ethics applies that analytical rigour to questions of how we ought to act, both as individuals and as societies. The three disciplines reinforce each other, and students who study them together find that each deepens their understanding of the others.

This four-year programme at the University of Nottingham begins with a foundation year designed to build the academic skills and subject knowledge you need to engage confidently with degree-level work. Once you move into the main programme you will encounter a rich range of traditions, from the major world religions to contemporary debates in moral and political philosophy. You will read primary texts, engage with scholarly debate, and develop the ability to construct and evaluate arguments with precision.

The programme also includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study these questions in a different cultural and academic setting, which can itself become a source of new perspectives on the material you are exploring.

The analytical skills you build are genuinely transferable. You will learn to read difficult texts with care, to write clearly under pressure, to recognise the assumptions underlying an argument, and to present a reasoned case. These abilities are valued in a wide range of professional contexts, including law, policy, public administration, journalism, social work, counselling and non-profit management.

Many graduates also move into education, where an understanding of religious and ethical diversity is increasingly important. Others pursue postgraduate study in theology, philosophy, applied ethics, or religious studies, with some going on to academic research or ministry. A background in this combination of disciplines is well suited to roles that require thoughtful engagement with questions of value, culture and human meaning.
