Religion and Asian and Middle Eastern studies

Religion and Asian and Middle Eastern studies is one of the most genuinely interdisciplinary fields available in higher education. It asks students to engage with some of the world's most significant intellectual and spiritual traditions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism, through the combined lenses of history, philosophy, literary criticism, and linguistics. Understanding these traditions requires more than broad knowledge; it requires the ability to read texts carefully in their original contexts, to analyse philosophical arguments with rigour, and to situate religious ideas within the social and historical forces that shaped them.

At the University of Oxford, this three-year full-time programme develops exactly that range of skills. You will engage with primary sources in their original languages and in translation, with critical and theoretical debates in religious studies and related disciplines, and with the specific intellectual traditions of Asia and the Middle East.
