Radiography

Diagnostic radiography sits at the heart of modern medicine, providing the clinical images that enable doctors to detect injury, disease, and abnormality without the need for surgery. Radiographers work with X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy equipment, applying both technical expertise and patient care skills to produce the high-quality images that clinicians depend on for diagnosis and treatment planning. The role combines scientific knowledge with direct patient contact, making it one of the more distinctive and rewarding of the allied health professions.

At Keele University this three-year, full-time BSc programme gives you the clinical skills, resilience, and healthcare knowledge required to use cutting-edge medical imaging technology in a dynamic healthcare environment. You will study the physics and anatomy that underpin diagnostic imaging alongside the patient-centred practice that is central to the role. Clinical placements are woven throughout the degree, placing you in real NHS departments where you develop your skills under supervision and build the professional confidence to deliver outstanding care.

By the time you graduate you will be equipped with both the technical competence and the professional judgement to work as a qualified diagnostic radiographer.

Diagnostic radiographers work primarily within the NHS, in hospitals across acute, community, and specialist settings, though opportunities also exist in the independent healthcare sector and internationally. The degree leads to registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, which is required to practise in the UK. Many graduates go on to develop specialist interests in areas such as CT, MRI, mammography, or interventional radiology, and senior radiographers often take on reporting responsibilities, interpreting images as well as producing them.
