About this course

Quantity surveying is the professional discipline concerned with the financial management of construction projects, from initial cost planning and procurement through to contract administration and final account. Quantity surveyors act as the essential link between designers and contractors, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. They are involved at every stage of the construction process, advising on costs, procuring contractors, managing contracts, valuing work in progress, and resolving financial disputes.

It is a profession that combines analytical rigour with commercial judgement and the ability to work across complex, multi-party projects.

At Glasgow Caledonian University this four-year full-time programme develops your technical knowledge in areas including measurement, cost planning, procurement, contract law, and construction technology alongside the professional and communication skills that the role demands. You will engage with real construction projects and industry contexts throughout the degree. The programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as work placement opportunities, giving you extensive professional experience in the industry and international perspective on how quantity surveying and construction management are practised in different markets.

Quantity surveying is a profession with clear routes to chartered status through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and this degree provides a strong foundation for that professional development. Graduates work in contractor organisations, consultancies, developer organisations, local authorities, housing associations, and client bodies across all sectors of the construction industry. Private sector commercial development, infrastructure, housing, and public sector construction all employ quantity surveyors in significant numbers.
