About this course

Quantity surveying is the discipline concerned with managing the financial and contractual aspects of construction projects, from the early stages of cost planning and procurement through to the final account at the end of a build. Quantity surveyors play a central role in ensuring that construction projects are delivered within budget, that risks are properly allocated between clients and contractors, and that disputes are resolved fairly and efficiently. The profession sits at the intersection of construction, law, finance, and project management, and its practitioners need to be both technically competent and commercially astute.

At Northumbria University, this four-year extended degree programme offers a rich combination of features alongside the academic content: it includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities. The extended structure provides additional time to develop professional skills and commercial awareness, and the combination of placement and international study means you graduate with substantial practical experience alongside your academic qualification. You will study construction technology, measurement and cost management, contract law, procurement, project management, and the economic and legal context in which construction projects are delivered.

The year abroad provides experience of different approaches to quantity surveying and construction management in international markets, which is increasingly relevant for graduates entering a global profession. A typical entry tariff of 120 points makes the programme broadly accessible.

Graduates of quantity surveying programmes are eligible to pursue membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which remains the standard professional qualification in the field. Careers span consultancy, contracting, project management, development management, and public sector procurement. The combination of placement experience, international study, and a professionally oriented degree provides a strong platform for rapid career development.

Further study at master's level or specialist professional training is available for those who want to develop expertise in specific sectors or roles.

A great decision
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city —…

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: access to facilities (workshop, equipment, specialist software) is genuinely first-rate. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city is…
