About this course

Pure mathematics is the branch of mathematics concerned with mathematical structures for their own sake, exploring patterns, relationships, and abstractions without necessarily requiring immediate practical application. It asks deep questions about the nature of number, space, symmetry, continuity, and proof, developing a mode of thinking that is both the most rigorous and the most creative in intellectual life. Pure mathematicians do not start from a practical problem and look for mathematical tools to solve it: they start from mathematical structures and explore their properties, trusting that the understanding gained will eventually find its uses, as it invariably does.

At the University of St Andrews, the MMath (Hons) in Pure Mathematics is a five-year programme that takes you to master's level within your undergraduate degree, developing a depth of mathematical understanding that a three or four-year programme cannot match. You will study the core areas of pure mathematics, including analysis, algebra, topology, number theory, and complex analysis, developing the capacity to work with abstract structures, construct rigorous proofs, and engage with mathematical ideas at a sophisticated level. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to experience pure mathematics in a different university environment and to encounter different mathematical traditions.

The typical entry tariff is 232 UCAS points.

Pure mathematics graduates go on to a remarkable variety of careers. Academic research in mathematics, statistics, theoretical physics, and computer science is a natural path for those drawn to the intellectual frontier. The analytical, logical, and problem-solving skills the degree develops are also highly valued in finance, cryptography, data science, technology, defence, and consultancy.

Many employers specifically seek mathematicians for roles that demand rigorous thinking, and the MMath qualification is a strong foundation for doctoral study in mathematics or related disciplines.

I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cost of living…
