Public Services

Public services studies is the academic examination of how government and state institutions respond to the needs of citizens and communities. It explores the organisation, delivery, and purpose of services in areas including emergency response, criminal justice, social care, housing, and health, asking how these services function, how they are shaped by society and culture, and what challenges they face in meeting the needs of increasingly complex populations. The discipline draws on sociology, public policy, management, and related fields to build an understanding of the public sector from the inside.

At Teesside University, this two-year full-time programme develops your understanding of the social and cultural contexts in which public services operate. You will explore how culture, family, social groups, and structural influences shape the development of individuals and communities, and how these social dynamics affect the availability and provision of public services. Contemporary issues in society and their impact on public service delivery are examined throughout, developing your capacity to think critically about the environments in which public sector workers operate and the challenges they navigate.

The programme is particularly suited to those who are already working in or aspiring to work in public service roles, providing an academic framework that helps you understand and reflect on practice, and developing the knowledge base that underpins professional development.

Graduates go on to careers in the police, fire and rescue services, the military, probation, social care, housing, local government, and the voluntary sector. For those already working in these fields, the qualification supports progression into more senior or specialist roles. The degree also provides a foundation for further study in social work, public policy, criminology, or related disciplines.
