Public Health

Public health is the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of whole populations rather than treating individuals. It draws on epidemiology, health policy, environmental health, behavioural science, and social research to understand the factors that shape how healthy communities are, and to develop strategies that reduce inequalities, prevent disease, and promote wellbeing at scale. The discipline recognises that the conditions in which people live, work, and grow up have a profound effect on their health, and that improving population health requires action across multiple sectors.

At Coventry University, this three-year full-time degree prepares you to work across the full range of public health challenges facing contemporary societies. You will study the determinants of health and illness, the methods used to measure and monitor population health, the design and evaluation of health promotion interventions, and the policy frameworks that shape public health practice. You will engage with issues including health inequalities, mental health, obesity, environmental health, and the organisation of healthcare systems.

A typical entry tariff of 120 points applies.

You will develop skills in epidemiology and health data analysis, qualitative and quantitative research methods, critical appraisal, and the ability to communicate complex health information clearly to different audiences. Public health practice requires you to think at the level of communities and systems rather than individuals, and the programme develops this population-level perspective throughout.

Graduates go on to work in local authorities, NHS organisations, national public health agencies, the voluntary sector, international health organisations, and the private sector in health consultancy and research roles. Many pursue postgraduate study or professional qualifications in public health, health promotion, epidemiology, or health policy. For those wishing to practise as a registered public health specialist, further postgraduate training and professional registration through the Faculty of Public Health or equivalent bodies is the standard route.
