Public Health and Community Studies

Public health and community studies is a discipline concerned with protecting and improving the health of populations and the communities they live in, rather than focusing on the care of individual patients. It draws on epidemiology, social science, psychology, and policy analysis to understand the social, economic, and environmental factors that shape health outcomes, and to develop and evaluate the interventions that can improve them. Public health practitioners work at the intersection of science, policy, and community action, seeking to prevent disease, promote wellbeing, and reduce the inequalities in health that are one of the most persistent forms of social injustice.

At Coventry University this three-year full-time programme takes a dual perspective, examining both the science and the art of promoting and protecting health and wellbeing, preventing ill health, and prolonging life through organised societal effort. You will study health promotion, health protection, health inequalities, community development, and the policy frameworks that shape public health practice. A sandwich year and a year abroad are incorporated into the programme, and a work placement is built in, giving you substantial professional experience in public health, health promotion, or community organisations alongside your academic studies.

This combination of theory and practice is central to developing the competencies needed for work in the field.

Graduates from public health and community studies programmes pursue careers in NHS public health teams, local authorities, health promotion organisations, community development bodies, the voluntary sector, and international health organisations. Roles include public health analyst, health improvement officer, community health worker, and programme coordinator. The field is a diverse one, and graduates also move into policy, research, social work, and education.

Many continue to postgraduate study in public health, health promotion, or epidemiology, particularly those who wish to pursue specialist professional qualifications or research careers.
