Psychology with Sociology

Psychology with sociology is a pairing that explores human behaviour at two levels simultaneously. Psychology investigates the individual: how people perceive, think, feel, and behave, examining the mental processes and individual differences that shape experience and action. Sociology examines the social: how groups, institutions, and structures shape what individuals do and experience, and how those structures are themselves maintained or changed.

Studied together, the two disciplines create a more complete picture of human life than either can provide alone, connecting the inner world of the mind to the outer world of social relations.

At Keele University, this full-time, three-year BSc allows you to learn about the mind, emotions, and individual differences, using theories, research methods, and concepts to uncover human behaviour, while also developing a sociological understanding of society and social change. The programme builds critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills that are directly relevant to a wide range of professional contexts. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic study.

Graduates from psychology with sociology programmes are well placed for careers in the health, education, civil service, and social care sectors. Mental health support roles, counselling (often with further training), human resources, community work, market research, and social policy are all natural directions. The research and analytical skills developed across the degree are valued in a wide range of professional and research contexts.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in psychology, social work, counselling, public health, or sociology, and some go on to professional training in clinical, occupational, or educational psychology.
