Psychology with Sociology

Psychology with sociology is a combination that reflects how deeply human behaviour is shaped by both individual minds and social structures. Psychology investigates the mental processes, motivations, emotions, and behaviours of individuals, while sociology examines the social groups, institutions, inequalities, and cultural forces that shape the contexts within which individuals live. At Edinburgh Napier University, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and to experience how different social and cultural environments illuminate the questions both disciplines raise. The year abroad is an international enrichment of what is already a socially aware degree, and it develops the cross-cultural perspective that both psychological and sociological understanding benefit from. You will study the core areas of psychology, including cognitive, developmental, social, and clinical psychology, alongside sociological content covering inequality, culture, identity, organisations, and social change.

Research methods, both quantitative and qualitative, are developed throughout as central skills of both disciplines.

The degree trains you to think at multiple levels simultaneously, from the individual experience to the social context, and to use the methods of both science and social inquiry to investigate human behaviour. Written communication, the ability to synthesise evidence from diverse sources, and the confidence to work with both statistical data and qualitative material are all skills the programme develops.
