About this course

Psychology with management combines the empirical science of human behaviour with the practical discipline of leading and organising people and institutions. Psychology provides rigorous tools for understanding motivation, personality, decision-making, group dynamics, leadership and wellbeing, all of which are directly relevant to the challenges of management. Management brings the strategic, operational and commercial context in which those psychological insights need to be applied, examining how organisations function, how resources are allocated and how effective leadership is developed and sustained.

At Heriot-Watt University you will study across four years of full-time study, including a year abroad that gives you an international perspective on both the discipline and professional practice. The programme takes a career-focused and problem-centred approach, designing its content around the practical skills that professional roles require alongside the theoretical foundations that the discipline demands. It is accredited by the British Psychological Society, providing Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is the essential credential for those wishing to pursue professional psychology qualifications.

Graduates in psychology with management work across human resources, organisational development, people analytics, management consultancy, training and development, occupational health, leadership coaching and a wide range of management roles in which understanding human behaviour is central to effective practice. Many also move into clinical, educational or occupational psychology training, where the management understanding provides an additional professional dimension. Others pursue postgraduate study in organisational psychology, human resource management, business psychology or management, building on the dual foundation the degree provides.

The combination is particularly valued in organisations that take seriously the evidence base for what makes management and leadership effective.
