Psychology with Foundation Year

Psychology is the scientific study of mind, behaviour, and experience. It asks why people think, feel, and act as they do, and it uses rigorous research methods to test theories against evidence. The questions at its heart are both ancient and urgently contemporary: what drives human motivation, how do early experiences shape development, how do social contexts influence behaviour, and what happens when mental processes go wrong?

These questions matter for medicine, education, law, business, and public policy, which is why psychology sits at the intersection of the natural and social sciences.

At the University of Keele, this four-year programme begins with a foundation year designed to build your academic and scientific foundations before you move into the main degree. You will then study the core areas of the discipline, including biological psychology, cognitive psychology, social psychology, and developmental psychology, giving you a broad and rigorous grounding in how the field understands human behaviour across different levels of analysis. You will also have the opportunity to explore more specialised areas such as mental health, forensic, health, counselling, business, and sport psychology, allowing you to develop interests and expertise in directions that matter to you.

The programme places strong emphasis on developing practical research skills, using industry-standard equipment and methods alongside theoretical study.

The degree is delivered full-time over four years including the foundation year. Graduates go on to work in clinical settings, educational psychology, forensic services, occupational and organisational roles, and research. Many use the degree as a stepping stone to postgraduate training in clinical, counselling, or educational psychology.

Others move into human resources, marketing, public health, social work, or policy, where psychological understanding adds real value.
