Psychology with Foundation Year

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, addressing questions that are both fundamental and intensely practical: why do people think the way they do, how do emotions influence decisions, what shapes development across the lifespan, and how can psychological understanding be used to support mental health and wellbeing? The discipline uses rigorous empirical methods drawn from biology, statistics, and experimental science to investigate questions that have direct relevance to healthcare, education, business, and everyday life.

This four-year programme at the University of Law includes a foundation year that builds the academic and scientific foundation you need before progressing to the main degree. As you move through the programme you will study the full breadth of psychological science, including perception, cognition, developmental psychology, social psychology, biological psychology, and research methods. You will also engage with applied areas, including mental health and wellbeing, with modules that evaluate psychological distress, health inequalities, and neurodiversity, contrasting traditional diagnostic models with psychological formulation.

Work-based learning provides a structured opportunity for applied professional development, including a placement experience that bridges academic principles with hands-on clinical or corporate experience, helping you develop workplace competencies alongside your academic studies.

Psychology graduates who complete a British Psychological Society-accredited degree are eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, the first step toward professional qualification in psychology. Careers include clinical and counselling psychology (with further postgraduate training), educational psychology, occupational and organisational psychology, health psychology, social work, human resources, research, marketing, and a wide range of roles in the public and private sector where an understanding of human behaviour adds value. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in psychology or a related professional field.
