Psychology with Foundation Year

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, asking how people think, feel, perceive, learn, and act, and what factors, biological, psychological, and social, shape those processes. It is a discipline with both rigorous scientific foundations and broad practical application, informing how we understand mental health, how we design educational environments, how organisations manage their people, and how public policy affects wellbeing. Studying psychology at degree level develops both the subject knowledge and the research methods skills that underpin all of these applications.

At Arden University, this four-year programme, which includes a foundation year, has been developed with input from practitioners across a wide range of professional contexts, including clinical and counselling psychology, consultancy, the fire service, and alumni working in varied professional fields. This means that the curriculum has been designed to equip you with the skills that are actually in demand across different careers and professions, rather than being purely academically oriented. The foundation year provides a structured entry for students who need to build their preparation before the main degree.

With a typical entry tariff of 32 UCAS points, the route, including the foundation year, is designed to be accessible to students from a wide range of starting points.

Psychology graduates are sought across a very wide range of careers. Those who wish to practise as clinical, counselling, or educational psychologists will need to complete further postgraduate professional training, but the undergraduate degree provides the Graduate Basis for Chartership with the British Psychological Society, which is a prerequisite for those routes. Beyond professional psychology, graduates move into human resources, health and social care, education, research, social services, marketing, management, and many other fields where understanding human behaviour is an asset.

Postgraduate study in psychology, occupational psychology, or related fields is available for those who wish to specialise.
