Psychology with Education
Psychology and education are natural partners: understanding how people learn, develop and behave is central to both disciplines, and studying them together gives you a richer account of human experience than either provides alone. Psychology brings the scientific methods and theoretical frameworks of cognitive, developmental, social and clinical research; education brings the practical and policy contexts in which those frameworks are applied, from early childhood through to adult learning. The combination is particularly valuable for anyone who wants to work with children and young people in a professional capacity.
At the University of Plymouth you will explore learning, development, memory, motivation, behaviour and wellbeing alongside the educational environments in which children grow and learn. You will examine how theory connects to practice, developing skills in observation, research and reflection that are as relevant to professional work as to academic enquiry. The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, giving you sustained professional experience in a relevant setting before you graduate, and a year abroad that broadens your educational and cultural perspective.
A work placement is embedded in the programme, meaning you leave with both a degree and a portfolio of professional experience.
Graduates of psychology with education are well prepared for a wide range of careers working with children, young people and families. Teaching is a common path, usually pursued through a postgraduate qualification such as a PGCE. Educational psychology is another direction, requiring further postgraduate training.
Other graduates move into roles in school support and inclusion, early years and childcare, youth work, social care, learning and development in the voluntary and public sectors, and research in education or psychology. The combination of scientific grounding in psychology and practical engagement with educational contexts makes this a degree with real breadth of application.
