Psychology with Criminology

Psychology with criminology rests on a compelling insight: that crime begins in the mind, and so do responses to it. Understanding criminal behaviour, its causes and consequences, requires a thorough understanding of how human beings think, feel, and make decisions, alongside the theoretical and policy frameworks through which societies define and respond to crime. This combination gives you both the scientific tools of psychology and the critical analytical perspective of criminology.

At the University of Hull, this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of the human mind alongside the study of crime and criminal justice. You will cover the core areas of psychology, including cognitive processes, biological bases of behaviour, developmental psychology, social psychology, and research methods, while also engaging with criminological theory, criminal justice policy, the sociology of deviance, and the psychology of offending, victimisation, and rehabilitation. The connection between the two disciplines is not merely additive: psychological concepts such as decision-making under pressure, moral development, attachment, and trauma are directly relevant to understanding why people offend and what helps them desist, and criminological thinking enriches your understanding of how social context shapes individual psychology.

The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points. Graduates go on to careers in criminal justice, forensic psychology (with further training), probation, social work, victim support, police services, and research. The combination is particularly well suited to roles in offender rehabilitation, risk assessment, and criminal justice policy.
