Psychology with Counselling

Psychology with counselling combines the scientific study of mind and behaviour with an introduction to the principles and practice of therapeutic and supportive communication. Psychology provides the theoretical and empirical foundations for understanding how people think, feel, develop and respond to difficulty; counselling introduces the relational and ethical dimensions of working directly with people in distress, and the specific skills involved in listening, reflecting, and supporting change. At the University of Bradford, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, making the total duration four years and providing additional preparation in the scientific and social science underpinning of the degree for those who need it.

You will study the core domains of psychology, including cognitive, developmental, social, biological and individual differences psychology, alongside research methods and statistics that are fundamental to evidence-based practice. The counselling strand introduces you to key theoretical approaches, the ethical framework governing therapeutic work, and the relational skills that define effective helping. Bradford's programme includes teaching delivered by practitioners with direct clinical and counselling experience, giving the degree a grounded, practical character alongside its academic content.

Graduates from psychology with counselling degrees enter careers in mental health support, health and social care, education, youth work, the voluntary sector and human resources. The psychology degree provides eligibility to apply for postgraduate training in clinical, counselling, educational or forensic psychology through the British Psychological Society's recognised training routes. Many graduates also pursue counselling diplomas or therapy training at postgraduate level, building on the foundation the degree provides.
