Psychology with Counselling

Psychology with counselling is a degree that combines the scientific study of mind and behaviour with the foundational knowledge and skills that underpin counselling practice. Psychology provides the theoretical and empirical framework, covering cognitive, social, developmental, biological, and clinical perspectives on human experience. Counselling adds an applied dimension, introducing you to the major therapeutic approaches and techniques that are used in practice, from person-centred and cognitive-behavioural therapy to psychodynamic approaches.

Together they develop both the analytical rigour of psychology and the relational and reflective skills that counselling requires.

At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society, which means it provides the Graduate Basis for Chartership, the recognised entry point to professional training in psychology in the UK. The BPS accreditation is an important quality marker and ensures the degree meets the standards required for those who wish to proceed to clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, or occupational psychology training. The counselling strand introduces you to therapeutic theory and the personal and professional development that effective counselling requires.

You will develop research skills in experimental design and statistical analysis alongside theoretical knowledge of psychology and the applied understanding of counselling approaches. Graduates from psychology with counselling programmes go on to use the GBC as a foundation for postgraduate professional training, move into mental health support, youth work, social care, human resources, education, or research roles, or pursue further study in psychology, counselling, or social work.
