Psychology with Clinical Approaches

Psychology with clinical approaches combines the scientific foundations of psychology with focused study of the psychological conditions that clinical practitioners encounter and treat. Understanding how the mind works is enriched by examining what happens when psychological processes go wrong, and the study of clinical conditions such as autism, schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety disorders deepens understanding of normal functioning as well as illuminating the experiences of people who need clinical support. This combination prepares you both for careers in applied psychology and for the kind of informed engagement with mental health that is increasingly valued across many professions.

At the University of Sussex, this three-year full-time degree is delivered within one of the UK's largest schools of psychology, which means access to significant research expertise and a broad curriculum. The programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route for students who want to build their academic foundation before the full honours degree begins. You will study the core areas of psychology required for British Psychological Society accreditation, including cognitive, developmental, social, biological, and individual differences psychology, alongside modules that focus specifically on clinical approaches, psychological assessment, and the understanding of specific clinical conditions.

A placement or work experience year is built into the programme, and a year abroad is also available, broadening your experience and perspectives.

You will develop scientific rigour, the capacity to evaluate evidence critically, and an understanding of mental health and clinical psychology that prepares you for the next stage of your training or career.

Graduates are eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership with the British Psychological Society. Many go on to postgraduate training in clinical, counselling, or health psychology. Others pursue careers in mental health support, healthcare, social work, education, and research, or move into fields where psychological knowledge and clinical understanding are applied in professional contexts.
