Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, addressing how people perceive, think, feel, and interact with the world and with each other. It draws on biology, philosophy, neuroscience, and social science to understand the full range of human experience, from the neural processes that underlie perception and memory to the social forces that shape identity and relationships. Psychology is both rigorously empirical and deeply relevant to everyday life, and it is one of the most widely studied subjects in higher education, valued for the breadth of skills it develops as well as for its direct vocational applications.

At the University of the West of Scotland, this four-year full-time programme provides a comprehensive grounding in psychological science. You will study core areas of the discipline, including cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, biological bases of behaviour, abnormal psychology, and research methods. The programme develops your ability to design studies, collect and analyse data, and interpret evidence critically, alongside a deep understanding of the theoretical frameworks that have shaped psychological science.

UWS has campuses across the west of Scotland, and the programme draws on the university's connections with health, social care, and public sector organisations in the region, enriching the professional relevance of your studies.

Graduates from psychology programmes go on to work in clinical, counselling, educational, occupational, forensic, and health psychology settings, as well as in research, human resources, marketing, communications, and the public sector. Many continue to postgraduate training to qualify as chartered psychologists in one of the applied specialisms, which typically requires further study and supervised practice. Others use their analytical and interpersonal skills in careers across education, social work, business, and the voluntary sector.

The degree is also a strong foundation for further study in medicine, social work, or law.
