Psychology
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, examining how people think, perceive, remember, feel, learn and act. It is simultaneously a natural science, drawing on neuroscience and biological approaches, and a social science, concerned with how social context, relationships and culture shape human experience and behaviour. The discipline is empirically grounded, and studying it develops skills in research design, statistical analysis, evidence evaluation and the critical interpretation of findings, alongside conceptual knowledge of the major theoretical frameworks that have shaped psychological understanding.
At the University of Nottingham you will study psychology over three years of full-time study, with a foundation year available for students who want an additional year of preparation before the degree begins. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study psychology from a different academic and cultural perspective at an international partner institution. The programme covers the core areas of psychological study including cognitive, social, developmental, biological and individual differences psychology, alongside training in research methods and statistical analysis that equips you to understand and conduct empirical research.

Psychology graduates pursue a wide range of careers. Those who want to work as psychologists need postgraduate training in their chosen specialism, whether clinical, educational, occupational, forensic or counselling psychology. Many graduates, however, enter directly into careers in mental health support, human resources, marketing, user experience research, education, social care and the public sector, where the combination of analytical skill and understanding of human behaviour is valued across a wide range of roles.
Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in psychology, neuroscience, social policy or a range of related fields.
