Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour. It examines how people perceive, think, feel, remember, learn and act, drawing on experimental methods, statistical analysis and a body of theory that spans cognitive neuroscience, social psychology, developmental psychology, clinical psychology and many other sub-fields. It is both a natural science, concerned with the biological and neural bases of behaviour, and a social science, attentive to the ways in which culture, relationships and social structures shape how people function.

Studying psychology develops both scientific rigour and a deeper understanding of what makes people tick.

At the University of Leicester you will study psychology over three years of full-time study, exploring the human mind from many angles and developing both the conceptual knowledge and the research skills that the discipline demands. You will learn research design, statistics and data analysis alongside the substantive content of the field, and you will develop the ability to evaluate evidence critically and apply psychological insight to real-world questions. A sandwich year provides extended professional experience, and a year abroad broadens your academic and personal perspective.

Psychology graduates work across an enormous range of sectors. Those who want to practise as psychologists, whether as clinical, educational, occupational, forensic or counselling psychologists, need postgraduate training after their undergraduate degree. Many graduates, however, go directly into roles in mental health support, human resources, marketing, market research, user experience design, education, social work and the public sector.
