Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour. It examines how people think, feel, perceive, learn, and act, both individually and in social contexts, drawing on experimental methods, statistical analysis, and careful observation to build an evidence base for understanding human experience. The discipline is extraordinarily broad, encompassing cognitive psychology and neuroscience at one end, social and developmental psychology in the middle, and clinical and applied psychology at the other, unified by a commitment to rigorous investigation and a willingness to question assumptions about how minds work.

At the University of Hull, where psychology has been taught since 1928, you will join a department with a long history of engagement with the discipline's defining moments, from the early recording of human brainwaves to the foundational studies of learning and cognitive development that shaped twentieth-century psychology. This three-year full-time BSc covers the core areas required for British Psychological Society accreditation, including biological psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, and research methods. Statistical competence is central to the degree, and you will develop your ability to design studies, analyse data, and interpret findings with rigour.

Laboratory and practical work runs throughout the programme, giving you direct experience of the investigative methods that underpin psychological science.

Psychology graduates possess a distinctive combination of skills: scientific rigour, quantitative competence, and a deep understanding of human behaviour and motivation. These are valued across a wide range of careers. Many graduates pursue further training to become clinical, educational, forensic, or occupational psychologists, typically requiring postgraduate study and supervised practice.

Others move directly into roles in human resources, market research, social research, education, mental health support, the civil service, and the charitable sector. The research and data skills developed by a psychology degree are increasingly valued in technology companies and data-driven organisations. A BPS-accredited degree is the first step towards Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is required for professional psychological practice.
