Psychology
Psychology is the scientific study of human thought, behaviour, and experience, asking why people think, feel, and act as they do, and how mental processes relate to the biological, social, and cultural contexts in which they occur. It is a discipline that ranges from the molecular mechanisms of perception to the dynamics of large social groups, and from developmental patterns in childhood to the effects of mental illness across the lifespan. Psychology is one of the most popular degree subjects in the UK, and its graduates enter a very wide range of careers. Those who wish to work as professional psychologists, whether in clinical, educational, forensic, occupational, or counselling psychology, will need further postgraduate training after the degree. Many graduates, however, enter careers in human resources, marketing, management, social research, healthcare, the voluntary sector, and public policy, where an understanding of human behaviour is genuinely valuable.
