Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour: how people think, perceive, learn, remember, feel and act, and why those processes vary between individuals and across social and cultural contexts. It is a discipline that bridges the natural and social sciences, drawing on neuroscience and biology on one side and sociology and cultural theory on the other, to build an understanding of human experience that is both empirically grounded and conceptually rich. Studying psychology develops quantitative research skills, critical evaluation of evidence and the ability to apply psychological knowledge to real-world questions about health, behaviour and wellbeing.

At the University of Bradford you will study psychology over three years of full-time study, with a foundation year available as an integrated entry route that builds academic foundations before the degree content begins. You will engage with the full breadth of the discipline, including social psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, neuropsychology and clinical applications, discovering areas of the field that you may not have previously encountered. The foundation year is particularly suited to students who bring motivation and interest but who want to build scientific and analytical confidence before tackling degree-level content.

Psychology graduates pursue a very wide range of careers. Those who wish to practise professionally as psychologists need postgraduate training in a chosen specialism, whether clinical, health, educational, forensic, occupational or counselling psychology. Many graduates, however, go directly into careers in mental health support, human resources, marketing, education, social care, the civil service and the public and voluntary sectors, where psychological understanding and research skills are directly valuable.
