Psychology of Sport

Sport psychology applies psychological knowledge and methods to the understanding and enhancement of performance, wellbeing and personal development in sport and exercise contexts. It examines how mental factors, including motivation, concentration, anxiety, confidence and cohesion, affect sporting performance, and how psychological principles can be applied to help athletes, coaches and teams perform consistently and cope with the demands of competitive sport. Beyond elite sport, the discipline is concerned with the role of exercise in mental health, the psychology of coaching and instruction, and the psychological dimensions of physical activity across the lifespan.

At the University of Salford this programme is part of a diverse psychology portfolio and takes an applied, scientifically grounded approach to the psychology of sport. You will study the core foundations of psychology, including social, cognitive, developmental and biological psychology, alongside sport-specific topics such as performance enhancement, group dynamics, injury psychology, talent development and the psychology of exercise and physical activity. The programme runs full time over three years and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you substantial opportunity to apply psychological principles in real sport and performance environments and to develop the professional skills that are central to working effectively as a sport psychologist or in related roles.

You will develop skills in research design, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, psychological assessment and the communication of psychological knowledge to athletes, coaches and other stakeholders.

Graduates from sport psychology programmes move into roles as performance coaches, strength and conditioning specialists, sports development officers, exercise and health promotion practitioners, and performance analysts. Many also go on to postgraduate training to qualify as chartered sport and exercise psychologists through the British Psychological Society, or to specialise further through a master's degree in sport psychology or performance psychology.
