Psychology in Education

Psychology in education is a discipline that brings the scientific study of mind and behaviour to bear on one of the most important practical questions in human society: how do people learn, and how can education be designed to support that learning most effectively? It draws on cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology and neuroscience to examine how children and adults acquire knowledge, develop skills, regulate their emotions and behaviour, and interact with teachers, peers and educational environments. The field has direct practical applications in teaching, assessment, curriculum design, special educational needs, school psychology and educational policy.

At the University of York, this three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of cognitive, social, developmental and biological aspects of psychology alongside a sustained focus on educational contexts. You will study how psychological theory and research intersect with education in formal and informal settings: how learning environments are designed, how assessment affects motivation, how educational inequality is produced and might be addressed, and how psychological knowledge informs practice in schools and other educational institutions. A sandwich year placement, a year abroad, and a work placement are all available, giving you substantial professional and international experience that connects your academic learning to real educational and psychological settings.

Research methods are central to psychological education, and you will develop both quantitative and qualitative skills alongside the ability to evaluate evidence critically and apply findings to practice.
