Forensic and criminal psychology applies psychological theory and research to questions about crime, criminal behaviour, victimisation, offender rehabilitation and the functioning of the justice system. It draws on social, developmental and clinical psychology alongside criminological thinking to understand why individuals commit crimes, how witnesses and victims are affected, how offenders can change and how psychological knowledge can improve investigative, legal and rehabilitative practice. It is a field that attracts significant public interest, though the academic discipline is considerably more nuanced and evidence-based than popular representations often suggest.
At Roehampton University this three-year programme combines psychological theories of crime and victimisation with a strong emphasis on professional development and applied practice. You will study psychological approaches to offending behaviour, victimology, risk assessment, eyewitness testimony, interviewing, rehabilitation and the psychological aspects of the legal process, developing both theoretical understanding and practical skills. A sandwich year provides a substantial period of professional experience in a relevant setting, and work placements are embedded throughout the programme, giving you networking opportunities and direct exposure to how forensic and criminal psychology is applied in practice.
The interdisciplinary approach means you will also engage with legal and sociological frameworks, developing the rounded understanding that real-world work in this area requires.
Graduates pursue careers in the criminal justice system, including probation, prison psychology, victim support, youth offending and police services. Clinical and forensic psychology roles at a higher level typically require postgraduate training, and many graduates go on to study for a BPS-accredited psychology conversion or a professional doctorate in forensic or clinical psychology. Research roles in academia, government and think tanks are a further pathway, particularly for those who want to contribute to the evidence base that shapes policy and practice.
