Psychology with a focus on educational and developmental psychology is a combination that directs the scientific study of mind and behaviour toward the contexts where development happens and where learning takes place. Developmental psychology examines how people change across the lifespan, from infancy through to old age, studying the cognitive, emotional, social, and physical processes that shape who we become. Educational psychology applies this knowledge to how people learn, how educational systems can be designed to support all learners, and how difficulties in learning and development can be identified and addressed.

This three-year full-time programme at Nottingham Trent University develops your understanding of psychology as a science alongside a focused exploration of its educational and developmental applications. You will study child and adolescent development, learning theory, the psychology of special educational needs, assessment and intervention, the social and cultural contexts of education, and the research methods used to investigate developmental and educational questions. NTU has strong connections to schools and educational services in the East Midlands, which enriches the programme with applied context and professional awareness.

Graduates from this programme are well placed for roles in education, including learning support, pastoral care, educational assessment, and SEND coordination. Many go on to graduate training as educational psychologists, a route that requires an accredited master's degree and supervised practice, for which this programme provides the academic foundation. Others pursue clinical or counselling psychology training, or move into roles in child and adolescent mental health, social work, and youth work.

The research skills developed in the programme are also valued in social research, policy analysis, and the voluntary sector. Postgraduate study in educational psychology, child development, or clinical psychology is a natural next step for graduates who want to specialise.
