Psychology, Counselling and Coaching

Psychology, counselling, and coaching is a degree for students who want to understand how people think, feel, and behave, and how that understanding can be applied in helping and developing others. Psychology provides the scientific foundation, examining cognition, emotion, motivation, personality, and the social and developmental factors that shape human behaviour. Counselling brings the therapeutic dimension, exploring how professional relationships can support people experiencing psychological distress, personal difficulties, or life transitions.

Coaching addresses performance and development, examining how individuals and organisations can be supported to identify goals, overcome obstacles, and fulfil potential. Together they create a practical and theoretically grounded preparation for helping professions.

At the University of Bedfordshire, this three-year full-time programme has been developed with input from industry professionals across the NHS, mental health support organisations, and other relevant fields, ensuring that the curriculum reflects the realities of professional practice. You will study psychological theory alongside the relational and communication skills that counselling and coaching require, developing both the understanding of human behaviour and the capability to apply it in professional contexts. The programme equips you with a foundation in evidence-based approaches to helping and development.

Graduates are prepared for careers in mental health support, youth work, human resources, learning and development, life coaching, careers guidance, and community support roles.
