Psychology and Sociology

Psychology and Sociology together offer one of the most powerful combinations available in the social sciences. Psychology investigates the processes that occur within individuals, examining how people think, feel, perceive, learn, and behave. Sociology examines the structures and forces that operate between people, exploring how institutions, inequalities, culture, and collective behaviour shape social life.

At Liverpool Hope University, this full-time programme runs over three years and includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, along with work placement opportunities. On the psychology side, you will engage with biological, cognitive, developmental, and social psychology, developing the empirical research skills that allow you to gather and interpret data about human behaviour. The sociology strand introduces you to classical and contemporary theory, social stratification, the sociology of education, health, crime, and culture, and the qualitative methods used to understand social life from the inside.

The year abroad broadens your perspective by placing you within a different social and academic context, while the sandwich year and placements give you professional experience in research, community, or human services settings before you graduate.

Graduates of Psychology and Sociology are well placed for careers in research, healthcare, education, social work, counselling, human resources, public policy, and community development. The combination is also strong preparation for further study, whether in occupational psychology, social research, clinical psychology, or sociology.
