Psychology and Neuroscience

Psychology and neuroscience together examine the mind and behaviour from complementary angles. Psychology is the scientific study of how people think, act, react and interact, drawing on experimental, observational and analytical methods to understand mental processes and behaviour in ways that can inform both individual wellbeing and broader societal responses to human challenges. Neuroscience investigates the biological substrate of that behaviour, the brain and nervous system, asking how neural structures and processes give rise to perception, memory, emotion, decision-making and consciousness.

Studying both disciplines together gives you a genuinely integrated perspective on the mind-brain relationship.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme develops your understanding of psychology as a scientific discipline alongside the neuroscientific methods and knowledge needed to investigate its biological basis. You will develop skills in experimental design, statistical analysis and critical evaluation of evidence, engaging with the latest research in cognitive, social, developmental and clinical psychology alongside neuroscience topics including neuroanatomy, cellular neuroscience, systems neuroscience and the neurobiology of cognition and emotion. A year abroad gives you the opportunity to study in a different country, engaging with different research traditions and broadening your perspective on both disciplines.

Graduates pursue careers in clinical and health psychology, neuroscience research, pharmaceutical and biotech industry research, education, human factors and ergonomics, marketing and user research, public health and policy. Many go on to postgraduate study in psychology, neuroscience, clinical psychology or cognitive science, the latter of which offers routes into artificial intelligence and computational modelling of cognition. The scientific rigour and quantitative training developed through the programme is valued across a wide range of research and analytical roles.
