Psychology and Education

Psychology and education is a combination accredited by the British Psychological Society that allows you to pursue a specialist area of study where insights from each discipline directly enhance understanding and application in the other. Psychology provides the scientific framework for understanding how people think, learn, develop, and behave, while education provides the real-world contexts in which those processes matter most. Studying them together allows you to test psychological theories in educational settings and to appreciate how each field is enriched by the perspectives of the other.

At Aberystwyth University, this three-year programme is taught by experts engaged in innovative research in child and adolescent development, education, atypical development (including autism and dyslexia), learning, neuroscience, and mental health. You will study the full breadth of psychological science alongside the educational contexts in which it applies, developing the research skills, theoretical knowledge, and applied understanding that the BPS accreditation reflects. The combination of rigorous scientific training and educational focus prepares you for a range of careers and further study pathways in both psychology and education.

Graduates with a BPS-accredited degree in psychology and education achieve Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, the first step toward professional psychological qualification. Career pathways include educational psychology (requiring further postgraduate training), teaching (via a PGCE), school counselling and wellbeing, learning support, special educational needs and disability roles, and research in developmental and educational psychology. Many graduates also move into applied psychology roles in mental health, human resources, and public policy, or pursue postgraduate study in psychology, education, or a related discipline.
