Psychology and Crime Foundation Pathway leading to a Degree

Psychology and crime is a combination that brings together two disciplines that illuminate each other at almost every point. Psychology asks how people think, feel, decide, and behave, drawing on experimental and clinical research to build models of human cognition, emotion, and social influence. Crime, as a social phenomenon and a professional domain, is shaped at every stage by psychological factors: from the motivations and decision-making of offenders to the reliability of eyewitness memory, the experience of victimisation, the psychology of interrogation, and the effectiveness of rehabilitation programmes.

At the University of Huddersfield, this programme is designed for students who have the capability to pursue a degree but do not yet hold the standard entry qualifications. A foundation year of one year's duration is integrated at the beginning, and students who pass it automatically progress to the degree without a separate application. You will study core psychology including cognitive, developmental, social, and biological psychology alongside the specific intersection of psychological theory and criminal behaviour, covering forensic psychology, criminological theory, victimology, and research methods.

The programme develops both your scientific understanding and your ability to apply it to the kinds of questions that practitioners in criminal justice and related fields face.

Graduates from psychology and crime programmes are well placed for careers in the police service, probation, victim support, forensic settings, rehabilitation services, social care, and academic research. The psychology component provides a foundation for postgraduate training in forensic psychology, clinical psychology, or counselling psychology for those who wish to practise as chartered psychologists. Postgraduate study is also available in criminology, criminal justice, and applied psychology.
