Professional Policing

Professional policing at the University of Winchester prepares graduates for a demanding career in one of the most consequential public services, developing the knowledge, skills, and professional approaches that policing in the twenty-first century requires. Modern policing demands far more than procedural competence: it requires evidence-based decision-making, sophisticated engagement with communities, the ability to work with vulnerable people, and an understanding of how law, ethics, and public accountability shape policing practice. This three-year full-time BSc provides that formation at degree level.

You will develop across a comprehensive range of knowledge domains, including evidence-based policing, decision-making and discretion, criminology and crime prevention, proactive approaches to vulnerability and risk, public protection, and wellbeing and resilience. The programme also addresses key emerging areas of policing responsibility, including digital policing and counter-terrorism, reflecting the realities of crime and disorder in contemporary society. Academic and research skills are developed throughout, culminating in final-year work that puts your learning into action through extended independent investigation.
