Professional Policing

Professional policing combines the theoretical understanding of crime and justice with the practical and ethical foundations needed to serve as a police officer in modern Britain. The discipline draws on criminology, law, sociology, and psychology to build an evidence-based understanding of how and why crime happens, how police services respond, and what effective and fair policing looks like in practice. As expectations of the police have grown more complex, encompassing safeguarding, community engagement, investigation, and collaboration with other agencies, the case for a professionally educated police workforce has become increasingly clear.

At the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, this three-year, full-time programme is designed to prepare you for a career in the police service while giving you the broader academic grounding that professional practice demands. You will study criminology and criminal justice theory alongside the practical dimensions of policing, developing an understanding of crime patterns, investigative techniques, police powers and accountability, safeguarding principles, and the ethical frameworks that govern professional conduct. The programme is aligned with the national framework for police education, meaning it is directly relevant to joining a police force and provides the academic qualification now expected of new entrants under the Police Education Qualifications Framework.

Graduates are well placed to apply to police forces across England and Wales and to related roles in the criminal justice system more broadly, including work in probation, crime analysis, youth justice, victim support, and community safety. Some graduates choose to develop specialist expertise through further study in criminology, forensic psychology, or criminal justice, while others progress directly into frontline policing and from there into specialist investigative, safeguarding, or leadership roles within the service.
